The wife and I eat quite a bit of squash. Especially butternut… roasted, baked, fried, boiled, mashed, stewed, etc. So earlier this year when she stumbled across a packet of butternut squash seeds, we decided to give it a shot.
Since the end of winter we’ve been growing these indoors and two vines have survived to the point of being ready for replanting. Because of limited space in the backyard I used an old storage bin and drilled some drainage holes into the bottom. I then lined it with jars and wine bottles which I’ve been hoarding for months. These make it a bit lighter, just in case I end up schlepping it around. This way I’m less likely to herniate myself.
After that we transplanted the squash and filled the bin with soil. Eventually we’ll put in some chicken-wire to keep out unwanted guests (more on that later), but for now they are ready.
